New to cross stitching!

Post by Draconix »

Hello all a 1st timer here, I'm really really new to cross stitching..kinda. I am 32 years old and the last time I cross-stitched was when I was 6 years old. So I would love to make these sprites but unsure where to begin! I know where to get the sprites and read the Link at http://www.spritestitch.com/?p=391 but one step missing. How do I get the image from pc to cloth or do I just print it up and stencil over it so to speak?

I have been a gamer and computer geek for years but this is a new thing that I would love to do. My friend's birthday is coming up in several months and would like to make her a Zelda II stitching and up at work I have tons of time on my hands since Im a caretaker. So any tips would be appreciated! Thanks in advance and sorry if I posted in the wrong forum, was unsure where to post at since there is not really a beginner's hall!!

Hi and welcome to Sprite Stitch!

We do have an Introductions thread - viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4 - but sometimes people miss it so it's fine :D

You can print your pattern up, or view it on your computer. Doesn't really matter, as long as you translate 1 pixel (or mark) to one cross stitch on your fabric. Does that make sense? Need more caffeine. Can someone explain this better for me? +1 internets to the first person that does a good job! :D

Makes perfect sense and thanks! I noticed one of the links on the how to tutorial for dark lialic or something to that effect is dead so I went on a search for another free one and was wondering does anyone have any experience with the ryijy stitch designer and what are their thoughts on it?

Ok I do have a question, how do you know what kind of stitch you need to do?

Going to use this chart as an example:

I know for the most part its color codes and symbols tell what color it is but my question is..on each symbol how do I know what kind of stitch to use or is it all standard cross stitch or 3/4 stitch or 1/2 stitch etc etc.

ok now for MY next question...

How do I figure out how many skeins I need to buy?

Example one skein is 8 strands and the color count is for example...1500 and Im doing 2 thread cross stitch.

There are several ways to estimate this, you can google around to find approximations like this one: http://home.comcast.net/~kathydyer/nf_x ... #floss_amt.

Thanks to those who have offered advice in the past. I'm still in need of advice. I have 18-Count Aida that I bought and Im ready to start my project but before I get started.

Stitch Count: 109w x 63h
Projected Finished Size: 22.14cm x 12.80 cm (25ct./inch)

So my question is this. Do I measure out 8 inches x 5 inches or is there something I don't know about?

All you need to do is divide the number of stitches high/wide by the count of your fabric. So, 109w / 18 ct = ~6 in, 63h / 18 ct = 3.5 in. Definitely cut yourself some extra wiggle room; sometimes the thread count isn't *exactly* 18 per inch. You'll also want extra around the edges to put in a frame or hoop as you stitch, if you're using one, and for framing when you're finished.
