Judging by the closed wholes in the fabric weave and some of the other imperfections in the closeup it looks like someone took some standard stock and painted on it before cross stitching through it. Easy way is to start with either a white or sky blue base (if you can still find sky blue fabric) and dry brush over it to give it a inconsistent but beautiful sky feel with clouds. Then while the paint is setting add some craft herpes (a.k.a. glitter) and you get that awesomy fabric.

Oh hay I made that! :D

It is painted aida, I used a roller as an experiment for this, which is why it turned out slightly cloudy. it's more obvious in the pic than in real life, though.
It's also a lot more lustrous in real life - I dumped about a third of a tube of light blue glitter paint into the mix I used, and there's no craft herpes to speak of - that glitter isn't moving one bit lol.
When I stitch a few of those unicorns, maybe 2 little pieces of glitter come off, so yeah, it's not going anywhere. ;)

I'm actually thinking of making a heap of it in the new year, and selling it in standard frame sizes, as well as kits of that pattern, at least. :)
Working on:
Retro X & Y! - lost the pattern and fabric, but it's resurfaced :D ...and i've lost it again lol
Attempting Diamond Painting
Making like three crochet blankets at once #nolife
slowly amassing floss for the old-style Epic Pokemon
