Best video game music?

Post by Lord Libidan »

I have to admit, I'm a massive final fantasy fan, and specifically of final fantasy 7.
The boss music "those who fight further" is an amazing bit of music.

What does everyone else think the best piece of music is?
If you're lucky I might just put it on the blog for everyone too. :D

Ooh, good choice! I love FF music. And it is so amazing when played by an orchestra - I went to the Distant Worlds in London last year, spent half the time trying not to burst into tears and ruin my make up! But going again this year, hehe. (Also, Dancing Mad played on an organ - can't tell you how epic that was.)
I also have a real fondness for the music of the Phantasy Star series, which had a lot of quirky little tunes :)

I'm not sure I can choose a best, since I think that is subjective - I can only choose something from a long list of favourites. And it would be "Call of Magic / Nerevar Rising" from The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind.

Jeremy Soule has this ability to capture the spirit of a game in a piece of music. He also has an amazing ability to make my hyper 3 year old daughter very calm and restful! (Elder Scrolls bedtime playlist FTW!)

(Also, while I think about it, Jeremy Soule once did an OCremix of Terra's Theme from FFVI...the first time I heard it I actually had tears in my eyes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_rpLNt81LU)

Hard to narrow down, but whenever I hear the music from Super Mario World on SNES I get all nostalgic and sit there smiling like a moron!

Right on. I've been known to sing the beat that Yoshi adds when you're on him :) :yoshi

Katamari had fantastic music, but the soft spot in my heart will always be reserved for the Super Mario theme.

In fact, my husband and I had an acoustic guitar version of it played as the recessional music at our wedding. We're extremely nerdy.

I have to say I prefer The Black Mages' version, as well as their releases of "J-E-N-O-V-A", "Man With the Machine Gun", "The Decisive Battle", and "Fight with Seymour". :D

I've also been a fan of Stemage's Metroid Metal project; I got a credit on the first CD release for donating. :P

In terms of music unrelated to thrash metal: "Ballad of the Wind Fish" from Link's Awakening is, hands down, my favorite piece of video game music. That whole soundtrack was excellent, but the Ballad in particular stunned me as a tween.

I'm more of a metal fan too. Having a bit of classical fever at the moment though. Oddly metal has made me appreciate it...

Audiosurf :P

I really like the Skyrim soundtrack, and I overheard some of Bastian, which I also liked. Oh, and the Portal songs, but not the whole game soundtracks

Buy the Metallica album 'S&M', they're accompanied by an orchestra for it and it sounds absolutely amazing.

Was just thinking about the SNES and one of my favourites on there, Mystic Quest (or Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest, or Final Fantasy USA depending on your region).

I always loved, and still do love, the boss battle music. I usually play it when I'm watching the last couple of minutes of an Ebay auction that I'm bidding on - seriously changes the tone! :D
