What do you use?

Post by OMGITSAKITTY »

I've been cross stitching for a few years now, and I've made a few changes from when I started to what I use now. At first, I used the Homecrafters Deluxe Hardwood Scroll Frame that you can get at Joann's, but I became frustrated that the Aida cloth kept slipping out of the frame and how the frame itself bent. I now use just a normal 6-inch plastic hoop, but even that is aggravating because of the "rings" it puts into the cloth and it looses cloth tension after about 15 minutes. I'm thinking of changing what I use, so I ask you this:

What do you use and why?

It varies for me. For really long width wise fabric I like to use a scroll frame. For projects that are ten by ten or less I like to use hoops. Finally, with projects ten by ten or more I like to use a large EZ snap frame. I LOVE this thing. In fact, I want to get smaller ones. You just lay the fabric over the plastic frame, then put clasps over the edges. Curl the clasps outwards to tense the fabric. I love em.

Oh, and rings and stuff, no biggie. Just wash it when your done and press it. The rings are gone ;)

I saw the EZ snap frame and was tempted. But I'm torn; the EZ snap frame or the ratchet needlework frame?

I also started with a scroll frame, but got annoyed with it after about the second project, its just not a very good design. :banghead:

now I just use a plastic hoop, i dont have problems losing tension, just have the circles that you need to iron out once you are done...

I hate hoops, they drive me mad :banghead: I use a scroll frame now which I like mostly, its just sewing it into position which annoys me but that's only at the start and they I'm doing the project. As long as its sewn in properly I don't loose tension. I like the look of the EZ snap frame but as I've got the scrolls I can't justify the cost right now. I'd say use what's comfortable to you.

I have about 7 or 8 different plastic hoops: one in every size from 4-inch to 12-inch, plus an extra 6-inch and 8-inch. I just now found out I've been using them upside down for two years.

I always give my stuff a quick hand wash in gentle liquid detergent and iron it, so no rings.

I've looked at the other devices, but I like these hoops because they don't take up much room and I really don't have any room to spare.

depending on the size some projects I don't use anything just hold the fabric in my hand which someone told me wasn't good  But I just got a scroll frame a few weeks ago and I like it although sometimes getting it tight to start can irritate me. Most people at work I asked when I bought on all had a different opinion so I would say it's kind of personal preference.

It depends on the fabric I am using. The project I am working on now I am using Linen so I am not using anything. With linen, tension really isn't an issue. If I am using Aida I use the snap hoop.

I just hold mine & make sure the piece is all nicely washed & ironed before finishing it off.
