i mean i spent a month doing the castle part and i am soooo close to the end... but i just cant do it. each time i pick it up ill do a few stitches here and there. but put it down and day dream about the next project i want to start.

so how do you keep your self motivated on the bigger projects. even the smaller ones. please help
Cats are awesome, just not when you are cross stitching.

I have diagnosed ADHD which definitely helps hahaha but probably not a good example. :D

I've heard people mention setting goal dates for projects. I find that being able to post a finished project on a site and get positive feedback is a good motivator.

i can't keep motivated

i go through phases, i'll be insanely into cross stitch and the next month i'll read like 4 books a week, and the next month i'll replay all my old video games, and then the next month it'll be cross stitch again... etc ;P

it's a little silly because i'll usually leave things half finished for months at a time
but it's not like i can help losing an interest in something ;P

Sometimes you must just kick yourself in the butt and get it done!! :club:
Setting a small goal is perfect! Must tell yourself to complete one letter per day or even 1/2 a letter.

When I was stitching my huge Hitsugaya (bleach) my hubby kept on telling me I wouldn't get it completed. I had to prove him wrong!!
It took 5 months stitching time (with time between to heal from a cortisone shot in my thumb/wrist because my doctor told me to rest)
I have started my next project that will take months again -- my motivation this time is I'm going to finish it before he manages to build a new part for a gun.
Will see who wins this time!!

Yeah, I'm one who finds it hard to get motivated, especially with the project I'm doing atm (littlemojo's Spike Spiegal pattern), because most of what I have left is filling in... (boring!!)

I watch a lot of anime and Doctor Who when I stitch, it keeps me concentrating on the stitching, and keeps me going one episode at a time (I've gone through 3 seasons of Doctor Who and about... 5 different anime's.. :P) That and stitching on the train going to uni (about an hour's trip) gets quite a bit done as well.

quit! I try to spend as little time doing things that I am not enjoying. The key for me is to not put it away in a drawer or box though...put it someplace visible, one day you'll see it and you'll have your motivation back.

I am exactly like Stardrifter.
I will go crazy cross-stitching for weeks at a time then cannot touch it all for a few more.
Too many hobbies to balance. =]
I haven't touched my one giant project for about three months.
I keep my projects small to medium size so I finish them within the few weeks I stitch like mad. =P
That way I don't get frustrated or discouraged.
I guess you eventually find out what works for you.

I agreed with Caiella, I watch my boyfriend play RPGs while I stitch on the couch (he's a huge Bioware nerd :good: ). Also maybe you should think about selling them. I had no motivation for any hobby I did, until someone really liked a project I never finished and wanted to buy it. Getting paid to sit on the couch is not a bad way to make some side money. Now I have a following, and I'm going to be selling some pieces to a big convention where I live. With how cheap floss and fabric can be, there's a huge overhead for labor charge, and it's a great feeling when something you've worked so hard on goes to someone who loves it so much!

good advise thank you all. i have started back on it again... but i have decided that i shouldn't feel guilty for starting small projects i think i like that feeling when its done too so i get that with the smaller projects.
