7x7ft Raccoon Mario Rug (crochet) + Brick Block Ottoman

Post by enemyairship »

Hi everyone! I'm new here...actually I'm still kind of new to crocheting as well (learned how in February by watching youtube videos!), but I thought you would enjoy this project. It's a rather large Raccoon Mario rug that I made for my bf's present back in July, plus a question mark block ottoman to go along with it!

Image
He's made of 386 "granny squares", each one representing 1 pixel (3.5" each) that makes up Raccoon Mario. At first I thought he would take me over a month to finish if I braced myself...but I was over-enthusiastic and finished him in 15 consecutive days! (approximate 120hrs)

Image
This is only about 1/4 of the squares I made, haha. It took 13 days to finish all the squares, then 2 days to sew all of them together.

Image
This ottoman took almost 3 days to cut everything precisely and sew all the pieces together! It's the first time I've worked with vinyl and had to buy a new presser foot for my machine specifically for sewing it. The black shadow is actually cut out from the yellow and black vinyl was sewn behind it to show through.

I hope you all enjoyed this, it was really fun to work on (though the rug nearly gave me carpal tunnel, haha!). Please let me know what you think! Thanks very much!

the rug is awesome, but I can't stop looking at that ottoman!!!

I've never seen a project like that, totally original. the outside is vinyl, but what is on the inside? is it just a cover for a regular ottoman?

If its just a cover, itd be sweet to see a companion cube cover too, you could trade them on and off too!

Wow, that ottoman looks very professional, like it was manufactured!

And I would be afraid to step on that Mario rug, I wouldn't want to get it dirty. Wonderful work! ^w^

Thanks for the kind comments! Actually it is just a slipcover for our ottoman, I've been wanting to make a Thwomper cover for it, but I can't find grey vinyl. Or I can make a brown cover where the block has already been punched out!

Also yeah...we have a tendency to jump around the rug because we're afraid of stepping on it too, haha

When I first saw the first pic, I thought the block was a papercraft! They both look very nice, good job!

These look amazing enemyairship! I really love the Mario rug. I have been wanting to learn how to crochet for the longest while, but still can't do it xD I need to watch some video demos, and I think that would help. I don't get it, because I know how to knit, and crocheting is supposed to be easier than knitting lol oh well :pac

Holy balls, 15 days for that whole rug!? That's nuts! It looks really, really great! I know nothing about crocheting, but I dunno, for being fairly new to it, it looks like you're doing an awesome job. ^^

And I love the ottoman. XD I think a Thwomper would be hi-larious, if you were to find the right colour for it.

I am simply floored by that rug  (Bad pun I know xD)

I've wanted to learn to crochet for a long time now and youve completly inspired me to try. I think practicing with a bunch of squares could be a good start. My big question is how did you connect the squares together? Did you sew it with a sewing machine or by hand? I really want to redo my room in an 8-bit motif xD
