I think this is a great idea! :nod

I already have a few ideas for the mash-up challenge and am really excited to get started! :D

Two competitions at once? Not sure I like that idea...
Less people would join in, less collaboration for the challenge idea...

To be honest, I think the time limit is half the challenge. You gotta make something small enough that you can make in the time, and still make it interesting. Having too long to do it kinda takes away from that...

Me too, actually. I know I suggested it but if I'm honest I'd prefer the challenge not to spill over into next year. I'll get a few more opinions before I set anything up, though.
I'm with you guys - I vote for mashups just being Dec, and then starting the New Year with something fresh!

...Ok this is off the beaten path but it could be fun...

There's this crazy surealist art thing called "Exquisite Corpse", it's also been adapted into a party game (sometimes called "telephone pictonary"). It's great fun and hilarious and I think that with some tweaking we could use it for a challenge.

The basic idea is that one person starts something and without seeing/understanding the "complete" sentence/picture another person finishes it.
The way I would do this would be:
  • one person writes a short sentence of what they want and another person makes it. They cannot use names of characters or the video games they come from.
For example I may ask for "pajama boy has a magic adventure with giant mushrooms" and I'm thinking "Little Nemo: Dream Master" (NES) but instead I get someone surrounded by magic goombas... bad example but I can't think of anything else atm...

I personally prefer having a longer time to work with, since I homeschool two kids and have very little time for stitching, but I'm also up for the challenge if the vote is leaning toward a one-month limit. :)

kuja.girl, I like that. I will add it to my ideas list!

OK, for December, I think we will stick to a one month (well, slightly less) thing. Apologies to those who did want more time, though.
I will set the challenge thread up shortly!

It've played this before online somewhere, and it really is rather good.
However, I'm not sure how we'd make it into a challenge... What 'tweaking' were you thinking of?

Oooooooooooo.... that sounds really cool!!! What if we did it as sort of a swap challenge, so you wouldn't actually send your piece to the other person, but everyone who wants to participate would send a message to BMH with their "clue" and then it would be randomly assigned to someone to stitch. That way it would still be a challenge and everyone could vote, and we could also all guess what it was supposed to be!

I'm glad people like the idea! It's not an easy one but I think it would pay off...
spinuntilyoufall's idea of each person submitting then passing their "clue" to the next person is right on - someone should probaly overview the ideas to make sure they are doable... though sometimes the hardest ideas give the best results!

I think we would have to ask people to limit their suggestions to a set number of words (no more than 10 for example) and disallow naming anything from a video game - that way the source of the result is totally random. Simple sentences, famous sayings/quotes, etc work best for this type of thing.

In case people haven't played this before, my friend scanned some our entries from the last session - I'll attach the best example. The words are either what someone had to draw or how they described the drawing when it was passed to them. I don't remember what the original sentence was, it was likely something mundane like "I enjoy drinking coffee when I program JAVA."

The handwriting is hard to read so...
Left: "a disgruntled stay at home mother cannot have her morning coffee and so instead she looks up images of hot java and is overcome with jealousy."
Right: "a man is watching p0rnographic material casually while enjoying a morning cup of Folgers (the best part of waking up) and is being judged by a nun walking past the open door."

The really famous example of this is "* fight". It starts with a pair of roosters... and goes downhill from there.
