Re: Stitching for Charity! (brainstorming)
I like the idea of multiple and themed quilts and to separate them by country/region. We definitely should send some money with the square(s) for assembly costs, though we would have to figure out how to do that in Europe, since not all countries have Euros. But I'm sure we can work something out.

We might be able to find a company that might donate(or a huge discount) the materials needed.
It will be excellent PR for them too~~

Re: Stitching for Charity! (brainstorming)
I like TabbiP's idea of including the CP logo and sprite stitch name on the quilt. I was thinking about this yesterday, maybe we could make the central square a big child's play logo (4 squares worth?). I think it would be cool to include the sprite stitch name as a banner at the top or bottom, maybe we could even adapt one of the site banners for this.
Judging from the contributers to the swap, I think there's definitely going to be enough for more than one quilt. I think we'd need to get numbers on people willing to contribute before we can really start planning the quilt construction. Also, would we one large bed sized quilts or lap size quilts or something in between, probably depends on how many squares we make, but its something to think about. I think DMLC's 6in x 6in squares would be a good size, maybe on 14 count fabric?
I don't see why we should only have one entry per game, there are a ton of recognizable characters from mario alone and limiting it to just one mario entry is going to make me a sad panda. I think maybe some kind of sliding scale based on the popularity/reconizability of the game and characters to figure out the number of squares from that game and then let the game groups figure out who's doing what.
For example, mario has 10 squares, zelda has 5 squares, super punchout has 1 square. Publish the list of games and number of squares, then get people to write in to one person with their top 3 game choices and pick from a hat which game they'd get. Then inform everyone in the mario group who they're working with and let them figure out who's doing what character so we don't have any duplicates. Maybe this is too complicated, but it seems like it would be easiest to divide the specifics into small groups and the generalities to one person or a small group of people.
Disclaimer:I know nothing about quilting, so don't point and laugh if these ideas are stupid.

I've never seen a quilt made up of aida squares...would that even work? would it look odd if the white fabric was not all exactly the same white?
just to throw another idea out there...I'm not recommending this, but we could also just collect a bunch of items over the next 6 months and hold one big auction with all the different items up for sale.

We could do both...johloh wrote:just to throw another idea out there...I'm not recommending this, but we could also just collect a bunch of items over the next 6 months and hold one big auction with all the different items up for sale.

Re: Stitching for Charity! (brainstorming)
You know instead of giving someone the responsibility of having to stitch a huge quilt together we could just buy afghan fabric for lap blankets and divide it into squares ( i'm talking sectioning it off with designated measurements) . It would definitely have to be the whole round robin idea though. Then we wouldn't have to worry about someone accidentally measuring wrong or put such a huge responsibility on one person.
I think we should do one big blanket (one square for each person that signs up) AND do the craft donation over the next couple of months.
Here is a link to the afghan fabric im talking about. It doesn't necessarily have to come from Joanns craft store and I've seen it cheaper at other places. I figure with a ton of people donating like 1-2 dollars though it wont even matter.
This one is not already measured

This one is already measured into 5inch sections and its 18 count.

Re: Stitching for Charity! (brainstorming)
I think for the designating of the games it might be a good idea to do like the swap and put 5 games you'd like in order and have one person try to divide them as fairly as possible. Another thing if we do have multiple quilts one 8-bit and one 16-bit you could have a mario/zelda square on each to help try to spread the games to more people if there is a big demand for people wanting to do them.
For the CP and sprite stitch logo it might be nice to maybe just embroider them on the corner of the quilts that way they stand out but won't sort of divide the main attention of the quilt?
It might be worth while to try to get some fabric donated if not sometimes strategic shopping can help too I know I did black friday at Joann's once and while I had to stand in line for two hours to get my fabric cut I also got a ton of fabric for not a lot of money. I think the only down side to the premade afghan is again if it gets lost in the mail and also some people might get it at inconvenient times for them where if we do seperate squares people can do them whenever it is convenient for them.

Re: Stitching for Charity! (brainstorming)
With 14 or 18 count fabric one of the benefits is that you can get it in lots of colours which might look good all stitched together. So that if you need a sky or water in the background you can use blue, sometimes black backgrounds are needed etc. Either that or do we say that the whole area of your individual square has to be stitched?johloh wrote:I've never seen a quilt made up of aida squares...would that even work? would it look odd if the white fabric was not all exactly the same white?
If we do more that one quilt maybe we could theme them by game or character? You might get a massive mario fan willing to pay more for a quilt that is all mario for example?
This might not work, I've not thought it through and not even sure if anyone would want this but, maybe some how we cold have everyone's usernames stitched on? Maybe include it with the spritestitch/cp name/logos etc? Or as a border? Or maybe everyone put it on their own square?

Re: Stitching for Charity! (brainstorming)
I am definitely in for this one! It sounds fantastic!
I think as long as the count is the same for all the fabric, we can pretty much choose whatever colour we want. The fun thing about quilts is that it can be a mish-mash of everything and will still look really cool! I have a bunch of patterns of different characters that I've already created for the wedding. I can post the list of them, if you want and share the patterns around. There are a ton of them though (at least 30-35 patterns). They range from Mario to Zelda or Final Fantasy 6 to Secret of Mana to Cronotrigger. Pretty much a different character for each guest invited to the wedding. Let me know if you want the sprite patterns and I'll post. They're all in PC Stitch though and I'm not sure how to convert to pdf.
I'm a popcap dork and I'm not sure how many of us are out there but what about a mini popcap quilt or lapblanket? We could have chuzzles on there (I have a pattern for that one too) and Plants vs. Zombies guys and maybe even funky gems from Bejeweled. That may be taking it a little to far but I play popcap games more than most other games. Just thought I'd thrown it out there. I'd totally buy that one if we posted them on ebay!
It would also be no problem to thrown in some money for the quilt making. Personally, I've never quilted before so it can't be left up to me! But getting some sponsors or something would be pretty amazing. I'm so excited!!
