To somebody of the Dark Ages, the Hobbit would be Sci-Fi. Dragons are like flying ships just made out of flesh and not steel. A Sword that glows? Mithiral armour the stuff of science fiction. Only now we say no Dragons are Fantasy not Science, glowing swords never happened, not going to. Mithrial you mean Kevlar right?

Sufficiently advanced sci-fi is indistinguishable from fantasy.Icelandic Hitman wrote:Fantasy is Sci-Fi that is so old that its no longer deemed Sci-Fi![]()

IF A = B THEN B=A for A and B to be equal.
You have completed the equations and hence they are one and the same.

I was simply reordering it to match up with Clarke's third law.

Re: New Poll- Sci-fi or Fantasy?
I said that I love them both but probably lean more toward fantasy. I prefer fantasy to read and play (board games/computer games/tabletop games) but I enjoy sci-fi television and movies. I just took a free online sci-fi/fantasy reading course where I read quite a bit of sci-fi/fantasy that I wouldn't have thought to read before and, for the most part, I liked what I read (I still have some of the books on my phone of the books I didn't get a chance to read for the course that I plan on reading in the near future). I really enjoyed Bradbury's The Chronicles of Mars. I also really enjoyed the female-centric Herland by feminist writer Charlotte Perkins Gilman (RMDC, you might like this one although it's probably not quite radical enough for you LOL!) but didn't get to read A Princess of Mars (the book Disney's John Carter is based on). I also found it really interesting to read sci-fi from Nathanial Hawthorne.

It's still on my list regardless!MeiTow wrote:Herland by feminist writer Charlotte Perkins Gilman (RMDC, you might like this one although it's probably not quite radical enough for you LOL!)
Also on the topic of books by women about women, I got Hild for my spouse after reading the NPR review. She enjoyed it; it's on my wait list now. It's not fantasy, but it is set in seventh-century Britain, so I imagine it still hits some of those buttons.

Oooo, I love historical fiction as well so I'll keep and eye out for that! You can get Herland via project Gutenburg as it was written in 1915 right on the cusp of the Sufferage movement. I will warn you now...you WILL want to strangle Terry in the most violent manner possible. I'm a moderate feminist and he made me want to vomit. LOL! However, it was an interesting look into time period and their views on men and women, if nothing else.

Re: New Poll- Sci-fi or Fantasy?
I love both Sci-Fi and Fantasy. Books, TV, movies, games, anything. I've always loved fiction in general, but I think as I've grown up a bit I've definitely leaned more towards the science fiction and fantasy genres, especially after seeing/reading/hearing some of the really deep and meaningful bits of some of the plots. They're just great for escaping while still drawing connections to real life.
