But how to make the margin 0 squares? Is it even possible?
What do I do with the squares in between, marked green?

Don't fold it all in one go. Using the colour coding in 3.jpg: Fold and sew red to green, fold and sew green to brown, fold and sew brown to pink, fodl and sew pink to blue, fold and sew blue to purple, fold and sew purple to orange.
Hope I am beeing helpful and not just confusing.

You can't cut to close, then there is a high possibility you cut of some thread that shouldn't be cut off.
But if you leave to much round the edges, it looks like sh*t.
I use something called perforated plastic. You make two of the figure, one front one back, then stitch them together. I can do a diagram if you wish.

Ok, you mean you use plastic instead of fabric with threads?
But the technique should be the same no matter what material one uses... I think...?

Has anyone mentioned zigzagging the edges for your cloth? That's my favorite, and you don't have to take it out afterwards, it blends in if done with the right thread. and if you want to turn the edges under and using a cloth, you can use the yoyo method with some cardboard or plastic inside. There is also applique.
