Finishing ideas for kids

Post by littlemojo »

I always make my kids (she is almost 11, he is 9 1/2) a cross stitch or embroidery for christmas. Problem is, the whole framed picture thing is getting old (and they have no more wall space left in thier rooms).

I'm looking for some ideas of projects I could do for them that a) doesn't involve waste canvas, b) won't be completely uncool and c) doesn't involve waste canvas.

Any hints?

Somebody really hates waste canvas, eh?

I'm right there with ya!

What about soluble canvas?? You can just wash in warm water and it disappears (I've not used it myself yet but looks really handy and easier than waste).

If you want to stick with aida fabric: bookmarks? Drink coaster (they make plastic coasters you can insert photos into, maybe those would work)?

There's a fantastic book called Doodle Stitching by Aimee Kay. It's got tons of ideas (and patterns) for cool embroidery gifts. Her projects include lampshades, lap quilts, skirt/jeans, an iPhone/cell phone case, and these really adorable felt stuffed animals. None of them require waste canvas -- instead you transfer your design onto the fabric and stitch directly on there.

Pillows are a good alternative too. I finish quite a few of my pieces for my kidlets (and their year end teachers gifts) off as pillows.
