The one thing I really hate about Doctor Who

Post by loafoftoast »

Is how absolutely fabulous the writing is.

I started watching the new seasons of DW years ago and promptly decided that Ten was going to be my favourite. For ever. I got to the end of Season 4 right after it aired and thought "This is it. This is all I'm going to watch." But this Christmas my Uncle watched one of the specials with Eleven in it, and I just had to know what happened to My doctor. So this week I've been re-watching everything from the beginning and rediscovering just how awesome it all really is. And then, last night I got to the end of season 4 again. And once again, I cried like a little child for the lonely man in the Tardis who was always being left behind.

This morning I discovered the series of specials that they released to say goodbye to my precious Ten. And just now, at 2am in the freaking morning, I finished them. And I'm crying like a baby again! And I'm not sure if I'll ever come to like the writers of Doctor Who for their ability to pluck at my heart strings, but right now I am very near to hating them for it.

And the worst part? Nobody I know watches it! So I couldn't rant at them about how the giant nosed man has earned my instant dislike, just because he's different.
So instead, I put this here. Where some of my fellow geeks can read, and possibly understand.

And darn it all, this made me feel better.

Now I'm going to go to bed so that I don't have to see that schnoz again until tomorrow.

The title of this had me raring up, getting ready to defend one of the best shows I've ever seen. Fortuanatley, I didn't have to use my Whovian attack.

I actually was introduced to Doctor Who when my family moved from Illinois to Iowa almost 13 years ago. We were watching the public television channel, and there was Tom Baker, who I knew as Puddleglum from the BBC 1980's version of The Silver Chair. The show intrigued me, although I'm fairly certain I wasn't sure what was going on. I was hooked (I was also introduced to the show Red Dwarf in this way as well). Sadly, we didn't have BBC America, and Doctor Who was only on late Friday nights, which then got moved to Saturday nights. They only showed the Fourth Doctor with a few episodes of the Fifth.

I don't remember when I got to see the revamp. I was in college at the time, and didn't have cable or anything. But as soon as I saw it, my love for it grew. Ten is my favorite Doctor, for Tenant's acting just makes him so easy to understand, easy to relate to, easy to emphasize with, and easy to love. I am a bit critical of the new series, however, as I'm still strongly in love with the original series. I'm actually going through and watching every single Doctor Who episode made (well, at least the ones the BBC didn't destroy :cray: ) I've only made it to the Third Doctor so far. It's very interesting and I don't mind if the special effects are kind of lame or if some of the storylines are weird. I'm a Whovian and I'm proud of it.

One thing I'm not really digging about the new series, though, is how the Doctor falls in love with his female companions. First it was Rose. Pretty much everyone I know loves the whole Ten/Rose thing, but I was finding it annoying, to be honest. I was glad when she left and then she kept coming back, which irked me. I don't hate Rose, but I felt like she could have left earlier and it would have been good. I'm not as miffed about River Song, but I dunno. I haven't seen all of Eleven's episodes yet (most of them) but I like her better than Rose.

One of these days I'll get around to watching the new series. I used to watch the old ones with my dad as a kid (mainly Tom Baker but some with the blonde guy from All Creatures Great and Small and the older, white-haired gentleman who's been in a ton of stuff but I get him confused with the older man in All Creatures Great and Small lol). I found when I rewatched an old episode when I was around 13 or so I realized how cheesy they really were and it's kind of sullied my outlook on them, I think. Same with the old D&D cartoon, old Thundercats, and old Voltron. I still love them, don't get me wrong, just don't have an urge to watch them.

So many shows I need to watch that I just haven't gotten around to yet. lol Rewatching all the Dr. Whos are first in this list as I want to give them another look for nostalgia purposes and because I feel I'll appreciate them differently now than I did when I was 6 and 12. lol

I love Doctor Who. I just stared watching some of the older ones they released on Netflix. It's one series I always go back and watch.

We finally started watching them and my daughter is completely and soundly in love with the show. She won't stop talking about it or Tennant or Barrowman...starting to drive me a little nuts. LOL! It is a great show though and the writing is fantastic.

I keep meaning to get on Netflix and watch the classic Who, but I always seem to forget. Maybe I'll watch a few episodes later while I stitch instead of something on the DVR.

Just to warn you, from what I've seen, the class Who's on Instant Watch are weird. If I remember correctly, they don't even have the first episode ever "An Unearthly Child". Not very complete. For that you have to actually get the DvDs.

Even the DVDs are rather incomplete; not all of the episodes that still exist have been released. Some of the older episodes which exist only in audio format are being animated for re-release, Flash style. I don't like the animation much, but at least they'll be out there in some form.
