They also learn to react to various names if you use them a lot so don't feel pressured to use just one (or none depending on the cat lol).
Our cat Joy now responds to Joy, JoyBean, Bean, and Beaner. Our cat Solstice refuses to answer to her name or her nickname Solie. lol Simba answers to his name but none of his nicknames (we adopted him at age 10. He turned 16 in March). We call him Old Man and SimbaBoo.

That sucks about the allergies but I understand it. My husband is allergic to our cats too and we have three of them! They are his favorite animal though so he puts up with it. Tee hee
