Maybe about the size of a Frosted Pumpkin sampler's squares? (Obviously we wouldn't have to do twelve of them. )

How about something like this?
The squares would be the designs. The space in between the squares can be used to personalise the sampler.
EDIT: Square size could be 50x50?
