I just finished this tiny guy. He is only 3.5" tall. This time I gave him "hair".

Hmm let me think about how long it took. For the cross stitch part, maybe 10-15 hours, the assembly took I'm going to guess 2 hours and the hair took awhile. Maybe 6 hours. So I'm guessing 18-23 hours.

Do you hand sew the pieces together, or did you use a machine (sorry if you've been asked that before)? This is brilliant, I love it!

I hand sew them together. I don't think it would work using a machine. The trick is to not show the bare aida. In the case of this one, the thing would be doubled because it is so tiny. That is why the assembly took so long (see my post above.)
