KG Chart says this pattern uses 49 colors, but I definitely didn't. The background is only a guide and you can vary the color scheme if you want.

I have that problem with KG Chart too - it's very annoying. My fix is to select the colours that aren't actually there and choose 'Change Color' to a colour that's already being used.

I've tried that, but sometimes KG won't let me do it. Other times, if I have really subtle coloring in the pattern, KG loses the color and changes it to match the main surroundings.
