Donkey Kong square

I want to stitch this Donkey Kong square, but I'm a little concerned about everything looking bunched. I know that DK and Pauline are set in place, but I've been playing with the positions of the barrels and Jumpman. These are the two I've got so far:
With the first square, I'm concerned that all of the action is taking place at the top. With the second square, I'm afraid that too much is on the left side. Which looks better? Should I move things around some more? I tried positioning Jumpman more to the right, as if he's advancing, but it looked dumb. I wish I could put him on that center bottom ladder, but I'm having difficulty in locating a climbing sprite.
I'm heading to Michael's tomorrow and picking out colors by eye that look appropriate. (Can you believe Pauline's skin is actually white in the game? I had never noticed.) Once I've decided which square to do, I'm actually going to break this down into 9 32x32 squares and hand pattern this. I literally have nothing better to do in one of my classes this semester. If anyone wants scans of that...
