Plastic- or aida-canvas?
Any thoughts?
And so, after 3 years...

First I tried with regular Aida fabric. I tried to stitch the two pieces together, but I wasn't happy over the result. I didn't even bother to finish it, you see the two threads hanging down. I should have done more testing before trying it. And listen more to experienced bookmarkstitchers.

Anyways. During this spring I started on the project again, but now using plastic canvas. It turned out ok. But the feel of the first bookmark, with the Aida fabric, is way cooler. Softer. Cuddlier.

My favorite is the goomba one! Also, am amused by your tagline about the smell of perler beads in the morning :)

Is the plastic canvas bookmark two-sided? Or are they two different bookmarks? Either way, it/they look great. I understand what you mean about liking soft and cuddly Aida. :)

Thank you! Have you tried working with perler beads? It's awesome :)

Yes, both the bookmarks are two-sided. The one with the Space Invaders-theme aswell as the Super Mario one.
Haha yeah I'm tired of the plastic canvas. Can't snuggle with it :)

HerrPersilja, I love the bookmarks! Looking at the Mario one, I think that you stitched on 14 count plastic canvas and whipstitched the two sides together? I was wondering if you thought it was a little thick, or if it was just right for a bookmark. Just debating my next book mark, and wanted to hear from your experience.

That's a perfect guess. Oh wait, I don't know what whipstitch is... *google*... yes something like that :)
Yeah, I think it's a little bit thick :/ But maybe it's not so much thicker than with aida, when I think about it. It's too stiff and doesn't fold.
But it does it's job :)

I made 2 bookmarks in one month (only my 2nd and 3rd cross stitching projects ever) and both times I used the pre-cut aida cloth bookmarks. They were the perfect size and I didn't have to worry about finishing up the edges. Attaching the felt to the back was an issue, though, since there was no excess material for me to fold down and glue or tape to. They both turned out really well! A little floppy, but I guess that's the price of using soft, cuddly aida, right?

I love the clean look of the plastic canvas bookmark. But you're right, fabric just feels friendlier in the hands. I think that exact same dilemma is why I've never made a bookmark. It might be time to follow your lead and go for it!

Have you guys ever tried using vinyl aida for bookmarks? It's soft and pliable, but doesn't unravel. I got a bookmark made of it as a gift several years ago and I think the texture is very nice.
