note: I wanted to cross-stitch something from this game, Cutie was at the top of the list, but had two choices, the one with her sitting cross-legged, or the one with her close up flying pose. I went with the sitting pose because it was full body and felt more balanced, the other while nice to see her torso without her hiding herself with her arms, her legs aren't on screen, otherwise that could have been a good choice for a vertically framed stitching. Either way, I still would have went with the sitting pose because it's cuter and she looks more innocent, unlike the other more skin revealing pose. No problems at all with this one, my colors were already picked out from previous projects sharing those same colors.

Astyanax - Cutie sitting (enhanced coloring)
PATTERN:
70w x 98h pixels = 5"w x 7"h approximately
Spoiler
note: Cutie is so adorable I felt that I had to have more of her and so picked out some more sprites to accompany the large Cutie project I had going. My gripe though, inaccuracies from one Cutie sprite to another, either with details or with poor color choices, so I took two of the smaller ones that I wanted to cross-stitch and began editing them. For this one, this was from a cut scene in the game where Astyanax and Cutie are sitting by a campfire talking, Cutie resting upon Astyanax's shoulder. Her original colors, as my mom put it, she looks like a pumpkin! Why they chose the color they did for her skin, I dunno, but something had to be done about that. I changed her skin to that from the scene with her sitting cross-legged which is the large one I was currently working on, also added in a few details that were missing such as her choker/scarf/ribbon/whatever it is, and the bands on the upper part of her leg warmers. But didn't stop there, added some more coloring, shading in places to make it appear that she herself were actually sitting right there next to a fire. No extra veiny wing details though, didn't want to overdo it, kept it simple.

Astyanax - Cutie flying (sprite edit)
Image goes here
PATTERN:
37w x 48h pixels = approximately 2¾"w x 3½"h
Spoiler
note: This is the other Cutie that I edited, full body, facing front, hovering in the air. The original sitting Cutie sprite, while her colors were yuck, her shape was fine, all I did to her was change her colors a bit, but this flying one, she's okay while playing the game, but still, what were the artist thinking in not making sure she looks like her larger close up images. So cross referencing her to another, larger more detailed sprite I started making some corrections, lots of them. Coloring, much the same as with the sitting sprite, once again, felt no need for fine wing details, just the things that I felt needed touching up and enhancing. It was a lot of work getting her to match more closely to her larger sprite, but once done and I had no more doubts that nothing else needed be done.

note: One thing I was debating, my choice of material, the whole time stitching I kept thinking, what the hell are you doing stitching on this crap? I hate working on plastic canvas. But she turned out rather nicely. Still think it would have been prettier on black aida, but I wanted to try something different for a change, afterall its good to have variety once in a while.

note: Like the Kick Master wolf queen I done some time ago, this one doesn't represent Willow so much as it's just a cool piece that I just had to do. Matanda is a dragon that Willow encounters only in this game, and only very briefly while exploring one of the many caves in the game, you meet him/or her, talk for a moment, get an item, that's it, Mantanda plays nothing but a very minor role. But when I was trying to think up a dragon to cross-stitch, this one I remembered fondly (I never forgot about you poor lonesome dragon) and had to do next (had orginally planned to do in 2013, but bumped 'im up to now). I thought this one would be somewhat easy at first, ha, I was wrong. I started at the center which was around Mantanda's foot, and I tell you I must've stitched, removed and restitched that foot 3-4 times, every time the colors just not working for me. I left the time I spent on all that out in the progress log, figured to call it experimentation time, color hunting and testing time. At first I thought my problem was with the turquoise, but then later found my original choice was fine, it was the green that was wrong (I was picking some parrot green and a couple others that weren't right), either the turquoise and green blended too much as to tell them apart, or they clashed to heavily, or with one pick, the dragon looked slimy. But once I got past that obstacle it was smooth going. Actually, even with the colors I ended up with, it took me having the dragon nearly finished before I relaxed and saw that my choices were good and no more needing to second guess myself. This piece turned out gorgeous, but some parts of this cross-stitch such as all that mass of turquoise in the dragon's rotund body, and the cavern floor, tedious, boring, wore me out, couldn't wait to finish, but I foresaw that before going into this one.

note: The Little Mermaid is one of my absolute favorite Disney movies, and Ariel silhoetted against a big bright full moon, this'll be lovely. Prior to starting this one I thought, oh, this would be so cool if I used glow-in-the-dark floss for the moon and water, Ariel's form would show up as the black space between the glowing moon and glistening pool around her, and did edge more towards feeling I had to do it this way, and if I had I would have entered her in for the Glow-in-the-dark Challenge at Sprite Stitch, but so cool as the effect would have been, stitching it would not have been--I stitched something with that kind of floss once before, told myself never again, floss was not fun to work with, way too feathery, fluffy. Another, gimmicks don't hold well for me, they don't last, the excitement of the effect is short-lived. So, stuck with basic floss. Ariel, the rock she's resting upon, simple, done real quick. But when I realized the moon and water wasn't white as it appears, well, lots of hours were used testing colors before I eventually just settled (still feel the color is too pale that I chose, even so, pickiness aside, it's a beautiful scene). And once I finally stuck with that color, boredom ensued while stitching the moon without even needing to look at the pattern as days and days of nothing but fill in went by, stretching out well into the middle of December when I had planned to have her done by the first week of the month. I don't want to ever stitch another humongous full moon ever again.

note: Okay, so while not an uncommon image, this is still the most grim image of Death seen on the NES, I'd die if I didn't do it. I had originally planned to do him quite some months before I actually finally got around to him, but kept pushing it off, favoring some other stitch project over this one. But I told myself, and just for kicks, the end of the world is coming, according to some fanatical beliefs (it'll be a grim fate for all of us, he-he-he), so hey, what better time than this to start on my Grim Reaper cross-stitch! Even better, I was right on time for the Villain Challenge contest at Sprite Stitch. Hey, what better villain than Death himself! This was my last cross-stitch piece for 2012.

Your stitchings are fabulous. They make a nice change from the usual Mario / Zelda / Pokemon projects we usually have. Not that there's anything wrong with those, not at all! But sometimes it is nice to see more unusual choices.
And so neatly stitched, too! The colour choices are also very nice. Hope to see more from you soon

Thank you. When I started cross-stitching that's one thing I wanted to do, something uncommon, the least likely someone else in the world having stitched a particular character the more likely I'd be the one to do it, also so long as its something from a game I like or looks really cool that I feel compelled to stitch it. I like Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Megaman, Final Fantasy, Sonic, a lot of the well know classics, but they're done all the time, I'll eventually hit them up as well, but for now, sticking with the lesser stitched because they need attention to.

This is how I feel about my stitching too.
Sometimes it means our work gets less attention than the mainstream stuff but I'm fine with that!

I've seen and admire a lot of your work, following your blog for several months as well as a few other members here. One that I thought was cool was that one day I came across this Alisia Dragoon one you did:
I have this as a pattern saved in my files as well for a possible much later cross-stitching, if ever I expand to doing Genesis games. It was this very piece that made me look at your other work, this during the long time I wasn't signed in here, so I just haven't commented my likes on them yet (will soon, takes a while for me to gather my thoughts and remember all the different things I looked at over the year that I liked).
Out of all the pieces that I thought would attract people to look at my work, I had never considered the Alisia Dragoon piece to do it. Thank you
Miss Clawful wrote:if ever I expand to doing Genesis games
There are a lot of fine games on that system (and indeed, other Sega consoles) just waiting for people like us to come along and give them some stitchy love!
