Past craft projects

Post by Kujikiri »

I was actually torn where to post this, as only two of the three projects I have here are needle-related. This was waaaay before I even thought about working with Aida and thread - basically, I was going off what I learned in middle school, where we made a yarn and plastic canvas bookmark. The third of the pieces is something I did in a chigiri-e class. I've done nothing with chigiri-e since. All three of the pieces are Monster Hunter related.

The first piece is an attempt at mapping out one of my favorite areas, Forest & Hills. It's a map that's been on almost every MH game (It's been on every game except Tri and 3rd Ultimate, for the NA crowd, I think). I basically made my pattern by squinting at my PSP screen, counting the pixels. Probably took me at least 8 hours to fully map out. However, I didn't account for the size, and I didn't know how to join pieces of plastic canvas, so after only crafting one quadrant, the project fell through. I think I still have the pattern somewhere, might put it up here.

The second piece is a Gravios, as depicted by his illustration in the in-game Monster Guide. I really liked the tribal style of the monster illustrations, and Gravios was the only one that looked doable at the time. I didn't count pixels this time, rather eyeballing it, again looking at my PSP screen. I think it came out pretty good compared to this, which wasn't a resource I had at the time. This I made for a friend for Christmas, I believe.

Finally, this is my first (and only) attempt at chigiri-e. I went for a Congalala this time, but without any of the more advanced techniques (and I had to do this within a few hours' worth of time, too), it's kind of sloppy.

I have one other, a Megaman yarn-stitch that I made for another friend (it's the standard Megaman sprite, on a plain background), but I don't have the picture for it around, I'm afraid.

I think they all look quite nice. I wonder if you're a Monster Hunter fan? ;)
The second one is my favorite. I think it's beautiful!
EDIT: In fact, I like it so much that you can see it on the blog tomorrow!

I LOVE MH. I used to play MH3 a lot with my friends on the Wii. Some extremely good times had!

Nice to see it getting some crafty love!

Monster Hunter holds a special place in my heart. I think I first started it in '05, when I was house-sitting for my grandparents. My aunt on the west coast had cancer, and they went there to be with her in her final days. I brought my PS2 to keep me entertained, and my cousin brought over three games that he thought I'd be interested in. One of those games was Monster Hunter.

I haven't played it as much as other people, but I think my approximate hours logged are as follows:

Monster Hunter (PS2) - 170 hours
Monster Hunter Freedom (PSP) - 280 hours
Monster Hunter Freedom 2 (PSP) - 410 hours
Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G/Freedom Unite (PSP) - 310 hours (total over the two versions; I transferred over when Unite came to NA)
Monster Hunter Portable 3rd - 85 hours (at this time I was getting tired; nobody played the Japanese version, and there's only so much fun to have by yourself)

I'm hoping to scrape together enough cash to pick up a 3DS, so I can play the newest MH, and I'm eagerly awaiting the day when MH4 is localized for us outside of Japan. But I might not play as much as I might normally, if I can't find anyone to play with :(

But yeah, Monster Hunter is probably my favorite franchise, followed by Pokemon. I guess it's the Japanese blood in me - I love me some monsters.
