Well, no machine might be tricky, but I have no sewing skills whatsoever and it worked out fine. Not perfect (I messed up big time halfway in and no way to do it over, so just went with it) but fine for a first time. Just think about what you want and try, only way to see if you can!LinkIsMyHomeboy wrote:I'm super jealous of the little travel kits! I wish I could put together something like that, but I have absolutely NO sewing skills (and no machine). Good job!

Re: SEPT/OCT Mini Swap - 45 entered!
I got my package today from diegonegro and it turns out it's one of my favorite games (Professor Layton) on one of my favorite items (a towel, in homage to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
). So, awesome combination and awesome results! The stitching is super neat, too, as you could probably tell if my phone camera wasn't so crappy.
Thanks again diegonegro, you really made my day today!

Disaster!
I was running on time with my item and wasn't concerned. But I woke up this morning and my puppy got into my supplies last night (He normally just attacks my supplies if I leave them on the couch but these were safe - so I thought) I have to redo some of my gift so now I know I'm going to be posting after the 31st unless I'm able to find some time somewhere
I'm so sorry XXX, I'll work as fast as I can.

Haha! Towels are one of the greatest items ever invented. I celebrate Towel Day every year!Aelys wrote:...one of my favorite items (a towel, in homage to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy)
Great gift, diegonegro, well done!
@ all the people who are running late: please don't worry about it! I know I said get it posted by the 31st but if you're a little over then it's ok. As long as everyone gets their gifts we all win.

lmao @ the towel and hitchhiker's guide reference. That's a great idea. I may have to make some of those later, it's really simple and cute!
I kind of went overboard with mine (first swap and I felt like I had to do something *awesome* I guess?) but I'm glad everyone likes it.
If you want to make a travel kit - they are called "hussifs" (there's a fun history behind this, it's based on the word "house-wife") and there are many free patterns available online. You could totally sew one by hand, mine is only half machine sewed, but I would use back stitches or double-running stitch the major seams to be safe.
Lijnloos did a great job with the elastic for the thread bobbins. I just put hoops in mine to loop thread over... either works!

You can! I made one last year and ended up having to sew it by hand because my machine likes to die every time I REALLY need it!kuja.girl wrote:You could totally sew one by hand

I'm so glad I'm not the only one! I also went a bit overboard on my pattern with my pursuit of having my first swap be super awesome! I just hope they like it!kuja.girl wrote: I kind of went overboard with mine (first swap and I felt like I had to do something *awesome* I guess?) but I'm glad everyone likes it.

Thanks for posting about the Hussif, I'd always wanted to make one but never knew what they were called, I found some cute tutorials online and am thinking about making one for my mother in law for christmas. Maybe after i make one for myself ; )
so that I can work out any problems, since i'm still pretty new to sewing

yeah, it's a weird name but once you learn it it you don't forget! My partner got the better hussif, my practice one has some... issues. It works but it's not nearly as nice or useful ;)
I really recommend doing a practice piece with inexpensive fabric if you are like me and reverse the "measure twice, cut once" rule... yeah. I've done that.
