1-up magnet

I've wanted to make some magnets but haven't known quite how to go about it. I know this is probably a stupid question, but how do you make the magnets? Am I just gluing my finished piece on the back of an old magnet? Is there a specific kind of magnet that's better than another? Do I have to use plastic canvas? If not, what's my alternative?

Hi,
You can buy magnets in your craft- and hobby-store.
I take two pieces of plastic canvas. One where I do the stitching and one that's just empty.
Then I sew the two pieces together and glue a magnet on the backside.
And that's why I use one extra piece of empty plastic canvas. Because it's easier to glue the magnet on a flat surface of plastic than a non-flat surface of textile threads. And a bit because it looks better. Cleaner. Nicer.
You could use "regular" canvas if you where stranded on a desert island and that was the only thing you had in your stitching survival kit, but it's waaaay easier to use plastic.
You have to secure the edges from preventing it from... ya, don't know what it's called, with a sewing machine or folding the edges somehow or how one now should do it. And it's tiny and would be tricky. And then you have to glue on textile.

I have finished the stitching on a couple of these, but I haven't glued magnets on. My stitching where I secured the plastic pieces together is not near as nice as yours though Herr - I need to practice that!

For the magnets I made in the swap I put a super strong magnet in between the 2 pieces of plastic canvas. This way no glue is needed and if you want (as I did) you can have double sided magnets.
I am also currently making a few Mario magnets! The ones here look great!

Ah clever! If the magnets are slim and strong enough to be hidden inside. That's a great idea!

Finished my mushrooms - they're not as nice because I didn't use multiple shades on them, but I am still pretty pleased with how they turned out.

Now I need to learn how to take good pictures of them. Perhaps I need to explore the 'macro' setting on my camera a bit more...

Thanks! I am still evolving my methods - all the magnets I have made so far have jagged plastic edges. It looks like you've clipped them at a diagonal on yours and it looks much better, so I am working on that now. Unfortunately, the ship has sailed on macro pictures of the mushrooms, as they are on their way to the fridge in the pastry kitchen where my fiancee works. But I will try it for my current magnet project, which I'll be posting about later. I hope you don't mind me copying your work!
