Ghibli patterns

I'm a big Studio Ghibli fan, and have decided that I want to do a little series of Ghibli towels. The only problem is that I can't seem to get the hang of making patterns.
So I thought I'd ask the more experienced pattern makers for a little
.
I'm doing 4 towels. I want 4 different images, one for each (duh), and they should be in the size range of 30-40 x 30-40 stitches. I'm doing them on 14 count soluble canvas, and that would make about the right size. I can also stitch them up "double size", so that one square on the pattern is 2x2 stitches, which would make the pattern 15-20x15-20. Number of colors is not an issue, "anything" is ok (but 30 colors per sprite might be a bit over the top). I really want to have one with the soot sprites, preferably 2-3 of them and having their star food/snacks, and one with Totoro. And maybe one with the black Ghost-thingy with the white mask from Spirited Away. Other than that I'll leave it to you to find other ideas.
So, there you have it. My humble request for help. There's no rush, and I would really like a lot of suggestions so I have some to choose from. (Yeah, I know I'm pushing it.
) But any and all help is very much appreciated. And I will of course make a WIP thread so you can see your pattern making skills becoming a beautiful piece.
