I looked up the pinhead stitch ('cause i've never heard of it before) and I'm wondering: Does it really hold the thread in place without coming loose?

Tent stitch is a fancy way of saying a half cross. So the entire pattern is just ////////, instead of XXXXXX

Anyone with previous Mario experience...Can you suggest a brighter, more Mario-esque red??

i've used DMC 817 for mario's hat and sleeves and for the spots on toad's hat when i did a super mario kart project:

DMC 817 is my favorite red. It's ALMOST identical to DMC 666, but just a smidge warmer. It's what I'm using in my giant Optimus Prime poster.

The pinhead stitch is great! Sometimes your stitch will anchor better than others, and you have to be very careful about your tension with the first leg of your first stitch. Once you're done that first stitch though, you're golden! If you make a mistake, and have to frog a section, you'll find that that little pinhead is a PitA to get out! I've been doing it for a few months now, and I still find myself swearing under my breath sometimes! If you do what you're supposed to, though, it anchors in very well. It does take some getting used to. Practice on a small project before using it on your BAP. I wasn't so smart, and dove right in. I did alright, I guess--150 colors in a project meant lots of color changes. So, I guess I really got a lot of practice!!

Great for confetti stitches too, because it doesn't add bulk to the back of the fabric!!

Thanks very much for the color suggestions, and all the compliments! I may be new around here, but I'm no stranger to stitching. I've worked on projects of all shapes, sizes, and magnitudes. Anything you guys need, gimme a shout! I'm full of tips, tricks, and cheats (according to my husband, some other things too!!).

These really look great. I've become totally addicted to 22 count fabric. I started a small project on 14 count and after 22 it seems gargantuan! (sp?)
I'm very jealous of the backs of your projects, mine never come out like that, even when I try! Great job!

My last project, which was on 18ct aida, seemed so tiny when I started it! Now that I'm working on 22, I realize how lucky I was!! I'm actually doing this tiny piece as a test for my next work. My next project, which will be the Super Mario World Map, will be stitched on 25 ct Lugana, three strands, over one. That's even smaller! I have a good, solid magnifier, and a professional grade floor stand. Good tools really help pull me through those tough fabrics.

The only thing that troubles me with the 22 ct aida is that it splits easily, and can be tough to count a long run, unless I count by two's. I don't know if I'll ever be able to do 14ct again... lol!

Thank you very much for you compliments on the back of my piece. I really only started trying to be neat about a year ago, by ending my threads without knots. I also tried to use loop start, whenever I could. About six months ago, I discovered the pinhead stitch, and it was love! <3 I can tell you, just a little tiny change can make a big, huge difference.
