WIP: Lashiec (Phantasy Star IV)

Post by Jack Lias »

I've only been doing cross-stitching since the beginning of December 2011, with a huge break between then and now due to lack of supplies. This is Lashiec from one of my favorite RPGs, Phantasy Star IV (on the Sega Genesis). He's a baddie through and through, and I figure I can't only stitch heroes.

On an unrelated note, if somebody could tell me how I can take better, clearer pictures (I use my Android cellphone as I have no camera), I would really appreciate that.

I started the project this morning. Thread count is 3, 6 colors have been used so far (the pattern has more, but those are for Lashiec's body). It was a real challenge to get the hoop on, and I still don't think I put it on right.

So, here it is. Day one.

sometimes you can get better pictures with more lighting, sometimes you can buy magnetic lenses that will stick to the back of your phone that'll improve it..
mostly though, the limitations are just made by the phone. you coudl check the settings to see if you can raise the resolution though.

Otherwise. AWESOME! I've never really gotten into the phantasy star series, but my husband enjoys them! your sprite is coming along nicely!

Thanks for the advice about the phone camera (I will look into it), and thank you for the compliment on my stitch. :3

I am hoping this project will take me no longer than three or four days, and I'm worried that Lashiec won't look the same at this size than he does in his smaller in-game sprite.

what do you plan on doing with it when you're done?
if you frame it, or do something with it that'll be seen less up close, it'll improve it's appearance with the size increase!

BUUUT I'm sure it'll look awesome. you'll be the only person who is critical of it!

I want to frame it, but as I lack both foresight and materials, I've put Lashiec on a canvas already occupied by other stitches and gaping holes where stitches were cut out. I just wanted to stitch something, you know? I'm afraid I won't have enough canvas around Lashiec to cut him out and frame him.

I always think this forum could do with more Phantasy Star (and more Sega in general) :D
An interesting choice, to choose Lashiec / Lassic and even more interesting that you would choose his PSIV incarnation! Being a complete Phan I am looking forward to seeing this one finished!

I wouldn't worry right now. I've stitched Phantasy Star characters and they almost never look right until they are done.

Looks to me like it's not tight enough? Or maybe not flat, anyway. The aida shouldn't buckle in the hoop, but it shouldn't be stretched too much either.

How much space do you have? You probably won't need a lot. But if there isn't much there are ways you can still frame it!

Looks great so far!

Truth of the matter is that I watched a YouTube video on how to put a hoop on, but I can't seem to get it so that the canvas is... what's the word? Taut? Now that I look at the canvas and the surrounding area around Lashiec, I think I may actually have enough room to frame him, but I've never done anything like that. This project is a huge undertaking compared to my smaller, four-color Red Mage sprite (which was far simpler by comparison).

As for why I chose his PSIV incarnation, that would be because Phantasy Star IV is the only game in the series I've finished (multiple times, at that). I've never seen his other incarnation in-game, and I like to stitch things I've actually seen in-game.

Thanks for the feedback. ^^

Yeah, it should be taut and flat. I still suspect that your hoop isn't tight enough for that to happen. You can try taking it off and putting it on again, maybe?

Totally understand! The other version of him is from PSI on the Master System (he was Lassic back then, yay for confusing translations!), and he looked pretty different back then :D

My hoop is missing a component (the little thing you screw onto the other end of the screw in the hoop). I figured Lashiec was a good stepping-stone between Final Fantasy characters and doing the Zelda ALttP world map (just kidding, I don't think I'll be able to handle a project like that for a long time seeing as how Lashiec is frustrating me and he's very simple by comparison).

Ahh, it makes sense now. Definitely not tight enough.

You'll need to replace your hoop or not use one for now (some people don't like holding it in the hand, though!)
