"Come! Wash your face!" [WIP]

Post by ScienceDad »

Well, now that the Earthbound alphabet project is done, I need a new stitch to work on :D
I was inspired by the quote-themed monthly contest that's going on, so I googled around for some ideas and was reminded of that great gag in FF1 when you're in the first town and try to interact with the fountain:

"See your face upon the clean water. How dirty! Come! Wash your face!"

I thought that would be the perfect stitch to put up in the guest bathroom :-)
And coupled with this image:

I need to highlight the fountain a bit so that one's eye is really drawn to the white mage and the water. It'll be tricky.

Cheers,
- sd.

Okay, finished modifying the image and adding text. Had to scoop out font from FF1 Anniversary Edition by googling screen captures, painting out the background using a fill tool with a high tolerance, and then flipping the fill colour up to an alpha channel transparency. Then I cut and pasted the message letter by letter and manually added drop shadows. Then I re-indexed the image to 128 colours (about the lowest I was willing to get away with - hopefully some of the colours will hit the same DMC thread assignments).

If anyone wants the FF1 alphabet I've gotten so far (lowercase and uppercase!) let me know.

The final pattern is 180 by 160 pixels, which should be manageable on 18 count Aida (I hope!) I've never attempted anything this big :-D

I tried generating a chart on Spriter but the absurd number of colours in the pattern made the legends spill off the page. Need to revise the code :-/

So here it is! Off to the local craft store to pick up supplies this weekend.

This is too perfect for a bathroom! I like how you made the water in the fountain bluer so that it's more noticeable. Looks like it'll be quite a task to complete... Looking forward to seeing some progress pictures. Good luck! :)

Now that I've actually started, I'm beginning to appreciate the scale of this project :-/
After days working on the light blues, I had to jump ahead and fill in the white mage just to give myself some motivation :)
btw, what the cheese is it with Bright Christmas Red (DMC 666)? I haven't been able to get any of this floss for months from any of my sources and my best source doesn't even carry an alternative in Anchor!

Maybe retailers pulled it because of that whole "rapture" thing back in May? Just in case having a skein of floss numbered 666 around might keep them from getting sucked into heaven?

Also, looks good so far... can't wait to see it finished.

If you're still having problems finding it, I'm reasonably certain that I can get some from my local craft store and I don't mind sending some to you. I'll let you know soonish. I'm going there tomorrow or the next day! :)

Just as an update: I was able to find that particular color of floss at my local craft store. I went ahead and grabbed a few extra skeins of it. If you would like some, I'll be more than happy to mail it to you.

Ah! Sorry I didn't see your previous post - I eventually managed to hunt some down in a dusty bin in the dimly lit corner of a craft store. There were four skeins of 666, as far as I know, in the entire city, and I grabbed two :-)
Thanks!

I love this! I really, really hate stitching the stone in any FF pattern though  I'm just about finished my quilt square and I did the scene from FF4 where Polom and Porom turn to stone. I only had to do a little bit of stone wall but I still wanted to scratch my eyes out. Not to mention KG chart drives me crazy because I have to figure my own colours out and I HATE colour matching! But it looks pretty awesome so I suppose it's worth it. Can't wait to see some more WIP pictures!
