Sprite Stitch Board!

Part 1/4

I am finally making progress on a project I've been meaning to do for ages: the black & white slideshow images from the Sonic 2 Ending. This finale is one of my favorite video game moments of all time, and eventually I hope to have all four slides of it framed and grouped together on my wall.

I've had a terrible time getting a halfway-decent image of my work so far, but here's the best I could do: I work from light to dark in terms of thread colors, and the subtleties of the greyscale I'm using here make it really difficult for cameras or scanners to pick up on the stitches. This, and the fact that I'm using oatmeal-colored canvas (I have a good amount of it to use up, so I went with what I had instead of purchasing white), makes things a little weird looking at the moment, to say the least.

The canvas color is much, much subtler in real life. Its almost painful radiance comes from some color/contrast tweaking I had to do to make the stitches stand out.

My custom color selections are as follows:
| = 762, Very Light Pewter
* = 415, Pearl Grey
X = 318, Light Steel Grey
[ ] = 317, Pewter Grey
E = 413, Dark Pewter Grey
(I am ignoring the one pixel of +)

This is my first WIP thread, so please bear with me as the work continues!

This is a project I always wanted to do! When I read the thread title I heard the music in my head and saw Tails heading for his plane...
Looks good so far, I can see some shapes appearing there. Nice choice of material, too. I think I would have just gone for white but oatmeal seems a lot more interesting.
The set will look amazing together, can't wait to see it done - good luck!! ^^

are you going to frame them or use each one in some other way?
i love seeing things like this because i get an explosion of ideas for the future

greys were annoying me on one of my projects so ive put it aside for a few months.
they were merging together and i couldnt tell them apart while stitching.
how you finding them?

Blackmageheart: So nice to hear from you again! The final frames of Tails taking off in the Tornado are my favorites too. ^__^ I'm excited to finally get there some day, although it may take a while.

Holder of Anime: Thanks for the comment! In regards to greyscale, I'm enjoying it more and more as the piece fills up. The hardest part was choosing which thread colors to use, because I didn't like what PCStitch or KGStitch were giving me (lots of light blues and pinks). What I wound up doing was looking at a DMC chart online that had the threads grouped by color, and lifting the grey gradient directly as it was displayed there. Did you use a stitching program's recommendations for your own project, or did you strike out on your own?

And I know exactly what you mean about not being able to tell the threads apart! I've been putting pencil marks through the finished pixels of my pattern sheet quite frequently to make sure I don't lose track of where I am. So far I've only made one mistake, and it was a tiny one, thank goodness.

And yes, the plan is to frame them someday. :)
