Interesting idea - I have to say that the idea occurred to me, but at 22 count (about the best I can do), it would be something like 10 feet wide and 8 feet tall. I don't even know what I'd do with that.
For yours to be smaller, you must be doing it on something like 33 count. (13 stitches per cm or so. I didn't even know they made that. what are you using?)

As far as the "where's link" idea...
For sentimental purposes I agree that he should be on the beach.
But not where he washes up. He needs to be where Marin sings to him, and he needs to be looking out to sea. There is nowhere else that could be appropriate.

Thanks for all the comments! Maybe it's crazy to start at project like this, but once I had the idea I had to see if I could finish it. :)

I love the idea of putting Link somewhere in the picture, I have to do that! I think I'd want him on the shore, as in the beginning of the game. Then it would be as if the adventure is just about to start...

Re the fabric: in the beginning when I was planning this I looked into aida but also only found 22 count. Instead I decided to use linen evenweave (13 threads/cm and one stitch/thread) to get a more manageable size.

I have to join the "wow" committee on this as well. I was amazed by the pattern alone, but seeing it started made it all that more awesome! Please please please post WIPs often.

May was super busy, with school and work and a move on top of it all (I love my apartment and my new home town btw. It's so good to live where the fun and interesting things are, instead of just where my school happens to be! :D ) but I did manage to find at a little time to stitch. Enough to start filling in the colours at least (or yeah, grayscale, but still):
