Micro Patterns (35x35)

Post by kuja.girl »

So I have a bunch of 3" hoops that I want to make into frames for finished cross stitch pieces. The problem is, a 3" hoop is tiny! Using 14 count fabric a finished pattern can only be about 35x35 dpi (or stitches, whatever).
So - Any ideas or suggestions for what I should fill these with? If you want to contribute patterns, feel free. This is just a place for me to gather ideas :)

Things I'm considering:
- classic video game icons - space invaders, NES LoZ, Metroid, etc. (but no mario!)
- insects (using sprites from animal crossng)
- Katamari Damacy (if I can find anything small)
- pins from The World Ends With You

Any ideas?

I personally think the bug idea from Animal Crossing is a cute idea.

Could you do a Pacman themed thing? Like Pacman in one, and one of the ghosts in another one, and then a dot in yet another one. You could have a giant Pacman map!

That's my one idea. Too early in the morning to come up with anything else. :p

Ummm...what about using higher count aida? :) That way the sprites could be a bit bigger and you're not as restricted.

The space invader one sounds pretty funny as does the Pac Man idea but I suck at Pac Man and don't think I could have it on my wall lol.
I have a personal reason to do the insects - I work in an Entomology lab ;)

This is true - but I was hoping to keep this as simple as possible. 14 count is the most common at the stores in my area and available in the most colors. I also just finished a large project on 32 count black linen which just about drove me nuts. That's the last time I do a 6x8 pattern on a high count black linen!!! I had to buy a special light to finish it.

I think I've settled on doing the cousins from Katamari Damacy. I made sprites for all but one of them last night and now I'm going to try stitching one a a test.
Because they are so small (but darn cute!) the details of the face will have to be done in quarter stitches and back stitched but I think it will be worth it!

Maybe I'm just Pokecrazy, but Berries and Items from Pokemon would be cute.
We are the Patchwork Pokemon Gym! Fear our needles for we summon our Pokemon with fabric and floss! And we are AWESOME!!

So of those berries have the strangest names and shapes...
My mind wanders to inappropriate places when I look at them so I think it would be a bad idea to put them on my wall :-P

Here's the first stitched cousin: Miso.
Miso happy!

The second one is halfway done too! They go really fast :) I'll post the patterns when I have them done - so far they are a work in progress.

if you're still fishing for ideas, here's what i'm up to. i'm working on some icons from the HUD in super metroid: the missile, super missile, power bomb, grappling hook. i'm making key chains out of them. one side will be green to indicate it's selected, and the other side will be purple to indicate it's not selected. then i can turn them over accordingly to show which weapon i currently have selected. hopefully i'll get some pictures up in a few weeks when i'm finished (currently i'm only doing a little bit each morning before work)
