Blackwork Pikachu WIP

Post by faewren »

Anybody heard of blackwork? It's a special type of counted stitching that is at least 500 years old. How cool is that? Anyway, instead of an overly complicated project, I decided to see if I could design one, and a video game character at that. I picked Pikachu (since I love that cutie!) and here's the pattern.

And since it's only 39x46 and it's not totally filled in it's working up quickly.

Now all I have to do is the actual blackwork geometric filler pattern. @_@

It'll be featured on my blog tomorrow, but I wanted to debut it here first even if it is a WIP.
I might actually do some more pokemon this way. I like the minimalist look.

(Since my q-frame seems to have been delayed, and I can't start my zelda project yet because of the stupid company *grumblegrumblegrumble*)

So , why do some of the boxes and octagons have a cross stitch in them? Is it just for a shaded effect? If so, that's pretty cool, and I can't wait to see what it looks like for real.

Yeah the extra x-stitches are for shading. I used the B/W male pikachu sprite to make the pattern, but since I was reducing the colors to 'just the basics' and taking out the shading colors plus the brown on Pika's tail, I thought put shading stitches would work.

When I finished I was surprised, and also thought it was cool - so I went with it. :D

Definitely a good use of blackwork. If you ever do a squirtle pattern make sure to post it up ^_^

Can't say that I'm familiar with blackwork, but the design looks very interesting. Perhaps something I should try in the future....?

I don't usually use KG so I paint slapped this together. The blackwork patterns I am doing in 1 thread, but they're done as 2 thread in the pattern. Up to you. The black outline I did in 2 threads.

I hope ya'all like this!
