Jiji magnet/pin

I found this pattern on the site awhile ago and have been meaning to work it into a pin like I've seen a couple people do.
I finished the pattern and cut him out and also cut out a second piece of grid to sew on the back of the first but I can't seem to get it to look neat.

I read about it here. But I don't know how to sew in the ends to hide them. I'd like for this one to be secure since I kind of beat up my belongings fairly well but I plan to make some Earthbound magnets for my fridge as well.

Anyway, here's Jiji:

I had already started to attempt the sewing together of both pieces.
Here's the back:

I only got about a third of the way around before I realized I wasn't so sure on how to tie/sew in the ends.

If anyone's got some time on their hands, I'd appreciate if someone could explain it a little for me or perhaps make a tutorial video or something along those lines.
Thanks!

Also, how do you like him? I think he pops really well! :)

I like it a lot. Do you have the pattern I think my sister would like one?

Thank you.

I'm fairly certain I got the pattern from this site.
Here it is:

I used DMC #340 for the ears but it was just guesswork.

i'm just doing a small knot, then try to go under some of the stitches that's keeping the pieces together and then cut the thread.
but often it ends up with the thread sticking out, but then i just try turning the knot so the thread sticks out on the backside.
don't know if that's a good explanation

I read something about knotting the thread and then sticking the needle in between the two pieces to the opposite side and cutting off the thread. I don't know if that makes sense but I think I'm going to give it a try.
