Mario Alphabet Variation

Post by Krybak17 »

(APPOLOGIES IN ADVANCE FOR THE LOOOOOOOOOOOONG POST!!!)

Hi, I'm new here, and new to stiching  I have been simply in awe of all of the amazing projects everyone has done. You guys are fantastic! I've been lurking for a long time, drooling over all of the beautiful projects every one does, and it's made me REALLY want to get into cross-stitching. Probably about a year ago I was looking at how-to's on-line, and I even went to the local craft store and window shopped down the stitching aisles, but I never took it any further because I never knew what exactly to make. I was overwhelmed by so many great ideas! The other reason I never started anything was because I figured I would get tired of hanging random framed work around the house and I was trying to decide on some sort of theme. (I'm a little, or alot, OCD)

I have been completely captivated by Johloh and Laialda's Mario Alphabet ideas. They are amazing. I have decided that a seperately framed alphabet project will be a perfect first cross-stiching undertaking, with the small, individual works. I am definitly going to be starting it in the next couple days! So hello to everyone, and now that I've finally registered and committed to start stitching you'll probably be seeing alot more of me on here!

I do actually have some questions, and even a variation, that I was hoping I could get some opinions on.

Essentially, I'm torn between 2 ideas...

#1 - Initially, I planned on following Laialda's patterns by about 70%. The only issue I had with her (his?) alphabet was that I wanted to stick with the most classic and recognizable NES games possible...and she included a few games from SNES.

Here is the list I had mostly decided on:
A - Arkanoid
B - Bubble Bobble
C - Castlevania
D - Donkey Kong
E - Excitebike
F - Final Fantasy
G - Gyromite
H - Hogan's Alley
I - Ice Climber
J - Joust
K - Kirby's Adventure (Kid Icarus?)
L - Lemmings
M - Metroid (Mega Man?)
N - Ninja Gaiden (Nintendo?)
O - Operation Wolf
P - Punch Out
Q - Q*bert
R - Rampage
S - Super Mario Bros.
T - Tetris
U - Ultima
V - Volleyball
W - World Championships
X - Xevious
Y - Yoshi
Z - Zelda

...then, I got to thinking...and I thought what if I made each letter with a collage of things from various Mario games that begin with that letter.

For Example: Q would show all of the Question blocks throught all of the different games, same with M for Marios. Letter's like P can have a variety of things like pipes and pirannah plants. But obviously, I'm have trouble with a few letters.

The games I wanted to use items from were: (NES)Super mario Bros 1, 2, 3, (SNES)Super Mario World (GB)Super Mario Land 1, 2
Here's what I cam up with:

A - Albatoss
B - Bowser, Blooper, Bullet Bill, Bricks, Bob-ombs, Birdo, Boos
C - Cheep Cheep, Chain Chomp, Coin, Castle, Cloud, Cape
D - Dry Bones
E - Eggs
F - Fire Flower, Flagpole, Fireballs, Fire Sticks, Frog Suit
G - Goomba
H - Hammer Bros
I
J
K - Koopa Troopa, Kuribo's Shoe, Koopalings, Key/Key Hole
L - Luigi, Lakitu, Lava, Leaf
M - Mario, Mushrooms
N
O
P - Princess, Pipe, Piranna Plant, P Wing, P Balloon, P Swiches
Q - Question Block
R - Racoon Suit
S - Spiny, Starman, Shy Guys, Spade Panel, Sun
T - Thwomps (a variety), Toad, Tanocki
U - Urchin
V - Vine, Volcano Lotus
W - Wiggler, Whistle
X
Y - Yoshi
Z

So I was just wondering what everyone thought, and if anyone had any ideas/opinions.

...and if anyone wants to make any sample patterns, I wouldn't mind ;) :Pray

Well I think it's a great idea! Though a very time demanding one depending on the size of the patterns you're looking to do. I'm more than willing to make you patterns for the different games from the original alphabet I did. ^_^ When I made those I was mainly sticking to games I'd played vs. any sort of console. After that I just picked ones I could find sprites for >.<

As for the mario themed one, I can possibly help you there as well but what size are you looking to have them be? And what are you thinking for the layout? All the sprites making up the border with a letter in the middle, or maybe a standard line sort of border with the object making a sort of college background behind the letter? I can make a general mock up of either if those two suggestions don't make sense :nod

I was originally picturing more of a standard border with a collage type background, but I'm thinking I'm going to have to abandon that idea. There were just too many letters I couldn't find anything for.

So, I'm thinking I'm going to go with the first list I posted, for which I'm planning to use alot of the patterns you posted. I absolutely LOVE your Donkey Kong pattern! And alot of the other ones.

I'd like my Super Mario Bros. and Zelda to be a bit different because I want to go with SMB 1 instead of 3, the the original Zelda instead of the SNES one.

But the one I really need some help on is the letter N. Instead of using a game (Ninja Gaiden), I was thinking about making "N is for Nintendo". For the word "Nintendo" I would want to use the Nintendo logo http://www.nintendo.com/countryselector in red. But then, I don't know what else to have on it. I thought the Nintendo logo thing might look nice (even though it's a little different) because it's about in the center of the alphabet.

But, I dunno.
I'm so indecisive!

Thank ya I'm glad you like them. ^_^ A fair amount really enjoyed the DK pattern which was great cause I probably spent the second most amount time on it. The first would be 'J' cause it is incredibly hard to find J games and then the sprites for them. >.<

Yeah, finding the sprites is probably the hardest part. The second being designing a pattern :P but once you have a general idea I find the pattern making goes fairly fast. ^_^

I'll see if I can make up the mario and zelda ones today, but the nintendo logo may take some playing around with. Do you have any preferences for what characters or scenes you'd like represented for those two?

Oh no, I just wanted to come up with some suggestions. :( Anyway, here they are:

A - Ant (SML 2)
D - Daisy (SML), Dragon Coin (SMW), Dino-Rhino (SMW), Dolphin (SMW)
I - Iggy Koopa (SMB 3)
O - On-Off-Switch (SMW)

I found all of them at http://www.mariowiki.com/ ... There are a lot more if you click at "characters", "items", "species" etc. at the left. I think the idea is great.

With the Zelda one, I'm pretty much open for anything. For the Mario one, in my mind I picture Mario and maybe a pipe on the bottom right or left, and maybe a brick or ? block with something coming out of it in the opposite upper corner? ( I don't really know size wise if that is possible)

But thanks! I'll appreciate anything you come up with!

Decided the dungeon scene works best since it's supposed to be on black cloth. Not extremely happy with it though since when I think back on this game I picture the overworld map not dungeon >.< I also thought to have him with his sword extended to attack, but...it well, just looked bad. If you don't like it I'll see if I can make something else. :)
