secondly, there are options. i was using a different type of plastic canvas which is actually transparent, you can only see it on the photo because the table isn't one solid colour (like the fridge will be).
there are ways of finishing it off though:
1 - "wrap around" - basically you cut down the edge of the canvas so its flat and then do a running stitch all around the edge.

2 - "cutting down" - this wasnt an option for me as i was using the floppy kind of canvas, but you cut the edge of the plastic canvas so there is just a slight raised bit in between each stitch which holds it in.

3 - "leave it" - do what i did.
