M4pl3G1rl's Journey Art Project

Post by m4pl3g1rl »

I'm obsessed with the game Journey. I have played it at least 50 times (which isn't much compared to some people) and each time I go through I spend a few minutes looking at the murals on the walls in each level.

The murals are quite lovely, and they look awfully pixelated if you ask me. But getting a picture of them to study for reference? Almost impossible. I've searched for months. And then I wandered onto the message boards for thatgamecompany and found the Journey threads. On there was a person who had bought the art book last November, who was analyzing the glyphs. The way he talked about it, it almost felt like we were discussing a real civilization!

I contacted him and he gave me everything I asked for! He gave me the 'history lesson' (the thing the Ancestors show the player), and took pictures of all the murals in the art book, including ones that weren't ultimately used. Quite a gift yes?

However, aside from the history lesson pictures, I've got a lot of pattern making to do. The pictures aren't exactly clear.

Plus they're huge. So I'm turning them into pixel pictures to turn them into patterns. Though I will say that the air swirls in this one are eyeballed. With a slanted pic it's hard to tell exactly where they are so I guessed. I think they came out okay.

I'm going to stitch them on a sandstone colored fabric I saw at JoAnn. I just have to wait a WEEK before I can afford it. So . . . I'm gonna finish the sampler and work on the patterns. I was just a little excited so I had to share. ^_^ Stay tuned!

I will definitely be following this!

I have an extremely large image of the Ancestors' story but it's just too large to stitch as one piece so I'm looking forward to seeing how this turns out. :)

Best of luck!

I have no way to play Journey as hubby got rid of the PS3 a couple of years ago, but I'm liking all the patterns that are coming from it.

@ BMH - I figured for the history lesson I could do the cut-out parts that you see in the murals in what I call the Temple of Light level. (The tower with the central pillar.) The other murals cover a good deal of the history. Although the giant dragon is tempting yes?

Still waiting for fabric, so I give you - The Master Dragon!

I figured if this was the biggest city leveler Dragon, it would be fancy. I put a sort of clock-work-esque fill on the wings, and a pseudo-diamond-back snake fill for the body. Deciding which way to put the fill was interesting. Also, the fill for the body all match up.

Even in 28 ct this thing would be huge. It's 255 stitches wide!

Edit: I meant snake, not snack. That's what I get for posting at 2am.

omg... I have been scouring the internet looking for those images! I ended up finding someone else's art project which helped, I don't know if you've seen this.

he did a series of 7 panels based on the game's story. Very beautiful and detailed. I look forward to seeing more as well, because it's awesome and selfishly because I don't have the source images and need some more reference materials for my own project :P

I need your help though. Since I am planning on stitching these on a stone colored fabric I'm not fully coloring in the background. I just can't decide if I want to do the pillar on the left or the pillar on the right.

Does anyone have a particular mural they'd like me to do next?

@kuja.girl - do you want me to put up the history lesson part one and part two? And I agree that the 'After the Journey' panels are pretty amazing.

Personally I think you should do them like the right one (assuming that white isn't being done)

I love the dolphin carpet things. One with them please <3?

Did you guys ever see the Journey Workspace post of the Journey FB page?

Lastly, the current play and history tapestries were put up by TGC. Found posted here if anyone interested *wonders if how hard it would be to make*
